When you see marketing for testosterone boosters, you see them boast about the inclusion of magnesium in their formula. There is no doubt that this is a vital mineral for overall body health, but is it worthy of all the hype in the muscle-building supplement arena? I decided to take a look at what research says and find out its role in testosterone boosters to see if it lives up to the marketing claims.
Does Magnesium Help With Testosterone?
Testosterone is an important hormone in men that helps keep virility, energy levels, boosts your mood, and supports muscle growth and bone strength. So where does magnesium come into play in a t-boosting supplement?
Many of the marketing material you see for the top t-boosters is that magnesium is a natural way to kickstart your body’s processes whereby testosterone is produced. Since it is a natural mineral, found in many food sources and readily available, it is deemed a safe way to reinforce hormone production. But does it do anything for your t-levels?
What Research Says
There are very few studies done on the effect of magnesium and t-levels, so I don’t have a lot to go on. However, the research that I did find is not terribly promising. Of the available studies that I found (such as this one), the results that it produced, in terms of raising the level of testosterone, showed a minimal increase – at least to the point of being statistically insignificant.
One study that is often referred to had test subjects take 10mg of magnesium per kilogram of body weight. Their results were tracked against a placebo group. At the end of the study, those who consumed the magnesium supplement showed an increase in free testosterone, however, there were flaws in the testing. With no baseline of t-levels prior to the study, it is unknown how much effect magnesium had on the levels of this hormone.
What is most likely happening, many hypothesize, is that magnesium is effective when there is a general deficiency of this mineral to begin with. If you already have a healthy level of magnesium in your diet, then going over and above won’t show any significant results. It is similar to zinc and testosterone in that manner. However, supplementing with magnesium can be of great benefit to correct any deficiency in this mineral.
That’s not to say that there aren’t benefits to getting enough of this mineral in your diet. While it is not directly correlated with testosterone production, it plays a vital role in muscle health, something any athlete or bodybuilder relies on. If you are hitting plateaus in your athletic endeavors, it is worth investigating whether a magnesium deficiency is the cause.
