Ketotarian Diet

benefits of the ketotarian diet

A new book has been published by author Will Cole called Ketotarian which promotes the idea of combining different diets to multiply the health benefits. In particular, Cole contends that combining aspects from vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and ketogenic diets can lead to more benefits than if one of those diets were strictly followed alone.

History of the Ketotarian Diet

Will Cole thought up the idea of his diet after years of watching patients suffer from a variety of health issues and believing that food plays a critical role of the growth of, and prevention of, many diseases and health issues. He witnessed the rise and fall of many different diets and formulated his own strategy to keep your body functioning at its best.

How the Ketotarian Diet Works

This diet is a plant-based version of the ketogenic diet and stays away from meats and dairy foods. The ketotarian diet has many of the same benefits of eating a diet that is high in fats but without the processed meats and dairy that are often linked with inflammation. Inflammation is the root of many autoimmune diseases, heart and cardiovascular issues, and even cancer.

This diet leverages all of the health properties of eating plant-based but without including the many pitfalls that come with eating a strict vegetarian diet. Eating plant-based foods has great detoxification benefits for your body, ridding it of toxins and pathogens that can make you ill or age your body prematurely. It also can help regulate your blood sugar.

On top of the detox properties, the ketotarian diet is also very low in carbohydrates, has ample (but not too much) protein, and is high in fat (in a healthy way which is vital for your body as an energy source). It, in effect, transitions your body from using sugars as a source and instead turns you into a fat burning machine in a state of ketosis.

Guidelines of the Ketotarian Diet

With this diet, you’ll get your carbs from leafy greens (which are great veggies for weight loss and high in nutrients).

For protein, nuts are a great option with this diet.

Healthy fats are obtained from foods like:

  • Avocados
  • Olives
  • Coconuts
  • Nuts

Fighting Inflammation

The science behind the ketotarian diet is all about fighting inflammation and warding off the health issues that accompany it. Consuming a diet that is high in fat, but without fiber that comes from plants, leads to more inflammation. With the ketotarian diet, this is not a worry. It is high in veggie intake to soothe inflammation and bring your body to a state of ketosis.

What Do Amazon Reviewers Say?

Sample Ketotarian Diet

Here is what the author himself eats under a diet plan like this:

Breakfast

A fat-loaded smoothie that is full of leafy greens like kale or spinach, full-fat coconut milk, and blueberries. He sometimes adds a slice of avocado to add creaminess to the consistency and throws in some chia seeds to add protein and more healthy fats.

Lunch

Noodle bowl made of zucchini along with pesto sauce.

Dinner

He likes to eat tacos, but skips the corn or flour tortilla and instead uses a lettuce wrap. He adds roasted cauliflower, guacamole, and cilantro for taste and nutrients.

In Conclusion

This diet is very easy to adhere to, as well as very sustainable to stick with for the long-run to reach your health goals. I tried this out for a couple weeks and one thing I noticed was a curbing of my appetite. Cravings lead to overeating and are the death of many diets. While it is plant-based, you can still add in meats in moderation, which was big for me.
