It is important that your diet gets you all the vitamins and minerals that you need. You know the main ones – Vitamins B and C, calcium, potassium, stuff like that. But one mineral that is often overlooked, but whose importance cannot be overstated, is iodine.

Beyond just helping promote overall better health, iodine has properties that make it beneficial for weight loss. That is why you will often find it in diet pill formulas. In this post, I take a look at what it does to help you shed pounds.

Iodine and Weight Loss

Before I talk about what iodine does for you, I’ll take a step back and talk about what happens when you aren’t getting enough of this mineral. For starters, it can take a toll on your appearance. A dull skin tone, dry skin, and brittle hair are all symptomatic of an iodine deficiency. In addition, it has a lot of effects internally. You will have less energy, trouble with digestion (constipation), cramping of the muscles, cardiovascular issues like a weak heartbeat, and overall fatigue.

Another side effect? Weight gain! Iodine helps to keep your thyroid working efficiently. It is important to have a healthy thyroid so that your body is working at its best. If you are not getting enough iodine it can lead to a condition called hypothyroidism, which is symptomized by weight gain and severe fatigue.

When you are afflicted with hypothyroidism your metabolism is slowed down and your body is not burning fat as efficiently. With less fat being turned into energy, you are fatigued and not maintaining a proper weight. There’s no surprise there. This is why it is important to get enough iodine in your diet. This can be done through your food intake. However, if you really want to make sure that you get your daily recommended dose, you should do so through supplementation.
