You may have heard of the terms “turmeric” and “curcumin” interchangeably, but there’s actually a distinction between them. Turmeric is an Indian spice that has been used medicinally for centuries and is often used as an ingredient in curry (it’s what gives it its yellow color).
Curcumin, on the other hand, is the active ingredient in this spice. Most people use these two words in place of each other, but in any case, what’s important is that you get some of it in your life! There are so many health benefits to adding this to your diet that you can’t afford to not soak up.
How Does Curcumin Help the Body?
There are compounds in turmeric called curcuminoids that are strong anti-inflammatories and antioxidants that can do wonders for your health.
However, curcumin is relatively sparse in turmeric, at around 3% of its content.
Because of this, it’s not easy to get the benefits of this plant through diet alone, which is why it is important to take it as a supplement where you can as much as a gram in a dose.
For better absorption, take it with some black pepper which contains piperine and can boost the absorption 20x than when taken alone. I recommend this curcumin supplement for that purpose.
Increased Brain Function
Curcumin can increase the levels of the growth hormone brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is responsible for forming neural connections and multiplying neurons.
A number of brain disorders have been associated with having a deficiency of this hormone.
With supplementation with curcumin, you may be able to delay many brain-related diseases that come with the aging process. In addition, you’ll have a sharper memory and clearer focus. Though more testing is recommended, there are signs it may also help ward off Alzheimer’s.
Reduced Risk of Heart Disease
Curcumin can improve the lining of your blood vessels, also called the endothelium.
By strengthening these walls, you have better regulation of your blood pressure, less risk of blood clots, and other factors associated with heart disease.
As mentioned above, this herb also helps with oxidation and inflammation, two more contributors to heart issues.
Relief from Arthritis
Arthritis is the result of inflammation of the joints. Naturally, the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric are a perfect remedy for this ailment.
In one study, test subjects who took a curcumin supplement even outperformed those who took a prescription anti-inflammatory drug.
Cancer is the result of uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells in your body. Studies have demonstrated that this herb can affect the spreading of these cells at the molecular level. It may even contribute to the death of these cells, though further study is needed for this to be conclusive.
It is particularly beneficial in preventing cancer in the digestive tract (colorectal cancer) with a 30-day study showing a reduction of lesions by 40% in men who had colon lesions.
