Peppermint – it’s not just for holiday snacking! I’m as guilty as any to put a little bit of Peppermint Schnapps into my hot chocolate over the holidays (it mixes a lot better than tequila, that’s for sure!), but that’s not what I’m here to talk about.
When it comes down to it, there are a ton of benefits of peppermint oil that you just can’t ignore. That said, let’s get into it!
What Benefits Does Peppermint Oil Provide?
Similar to the posts I’ve written about various fruits (like this one), peppermint oil is absolutely packed with vitamins and minerals. Vitamin A, C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, the list goes on. It’s why it has become so popular in skin care products, medicine, aromatherapy, and teas. Here are some of the health benefits you could experience when you start incorporating more of this essential oil into your routine.
The phytochemicals in peppermint oil are nature’s antioxidant.
Apply some of this oil to your skin to help ward off acne, fight bacteria that collects on the epidermis, and even tight your pores and reduce inflammation.
This oil has become widespread in the skin care industry, and for good reason! Next time you take a shower with eucalyptus, add some of this in there as well!
This essential oil is widely used by those who suffer from anxiety or depression because of its calming effects.
Want a clear mind?
Light up some peppermint oil (my favorite is this one) in a diffuser or spark up a peppermint scented candle. This oil works as a stimulant for better brain health, strengthening your mind to fight against negative thoughts associated with depression and anxiety. It’s the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day.
Next time you reach for a pain reliever (like these), consider reaching for peppermint oil as well.
Rub a little dab of this on your temple or forehead for a quick way to get rid of a headache or a migraine.
The anti-inflammatory and cooling effects of this oil temper the nerves and veins that are causing the tension in your head and your ache will be gone in less than 15 minutes!
Urinary Tract Infections
I also talked about this in my Lemon Caps review, but this oil is another way to deal with urinary tract problems.
Peppermint oil can help bring calm to your urinary tract and eradicate the problem with consistent use.
You can do this through topical use.
However, to really get to the source it is recommended consuming it so it can pass through your tract. From there it fights bacteria and protects against viral outbreaks. If you have kidney stones or a UTI, this may be just what you need.
Just like how you can rub this around your temple and forehead for headache relief, it works just the same for sore muscles and achy joints.
Went a little too hard in the gym?
Got too drunk last night, slept awkwardly and woke up with a stiff neck or back? (I’ve been there way too often!). Rub some of this on the area that ails you to bring some much-needed relief.
Just like how it helps with the urinary tract, it similarly helps with gastrointestinal issues.
A healthy digestive system is a sign of a healthy body. This essential oil can help keep you regular in the bathroom by reducing gas accumulation in your gut.
It can also help relieve constipation, nausea, and vomiting. Add a few drops of this to water or some tea for better digestive health.
