Health Benefits of Cacao

health benefits of cacao chocolate

Who doesn’t love chocolate? If you don’t – get out of here! This post is not for you!

I’m an absolute chocolate lover and indulge frequently. (I just make sure to get to the gym to burn off those sweets, and otherwise follow a healthy diet). But beyond being such a sweet treat, did you know that there are a lot of health benefits to cacao? It’s true! Read on and I’ll fill you in on why you shouldn’t feel guilty about reaching for that candy bar next time.

What Health Benefits Does Cacao Have?

Cacao is chocolate in its purest form, taken directly from the seeds of the fruit of the cacao tree. Anyone know of a greenhouse where I can get one of these to plant in my backyard? Not only does it make a delicious snack, but it has a lot of properties that are beneficial to your health. Ready to hear them? Here we go!

Hormone Balance

When a woman is going through PMS, ever notice she starts snacking on candy usually? At least I can say that about the lady in my life, and I’m sure she’s not alone. Menstruation is a time when the hormones are all over the place, and there are compounds in cacao that help restore balance to hormonal levels.

It can boost serotonin levels and suppress cortisol, a stress-inducing hormone.

Besides genetics, a lot of the aging process has to do with free radicals.

This is polluted air, dirt, and grime that clog up our skin and make it age prematurely, not to mention all the radicals that wreak havoc inside our body as well.

These toxins, if not flushed out, can make you look much older than your age. As we get older, our body’s ability to rid ourselves of these toxins deteriorates, which is why it is important to get antioxidant foods in your diet – like cacao! Studies have shown that it is an even more powerful than blueberries — a superfood known for its antioxidant properties — up to 20x more effective!

Workout Recovery

Cacao, in its raw form, contains the amino acid arginine which turns into nitric oxide and helps to regular blood pressure and aid in muscle recovery. In addition, while nitric oxide does have some helpful properties, it also converts into a toxin – which is where the above-mentioned benefit comes in handy!

Next time you finish a workout, follow it up with a tasty snack to help you recover faster.

Makes You Feel Good

Eating some chocolate is like bliss, right? Well, that satisfaction is not just from the taste, but also from the chemical reactions that it causes in your body.

Raw cacao has anandamide, known as the “bliss molecule” which is released (like endorphins) when we feel good.

Anandamide affects the neurotransmitters and suppresses anxiety and depression, bringing you that beautiful state of bliss on a chemical level!

Tips For Getting Cacao

If you’re looking for cacao, as opposed to cocoa (there is a difference), opt for dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

You can pick up some cacao nibs like these which are cacao in their raw form, unprocessed, and contain no sugars and bring you the most benefits.

Or, better yet – you can get it in a diet pill like Shredz Fat Burner (review here)!
