In yet another edition of this continuing series of investigating the ingredients that are commonly used in diet pills, today I’m taking a look at Cissus quadrangularis, an herb that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine.

A study that was published in 2008 investigated the effect of this herb on weight loss. In these tests, the conductors split up a group of 72 participants into three groups. One took a placebo, a second took cissus quadrangularis, and a third took a blend of Cissus quadrangularis and Irvingia gabonensis (African Mango).
In relation to the placebo group, there was far more significant by those who took the cissus quadrangularis herb. They showed marked improvement in body weight, waist size, as well as cholesterol levels. Even more, the best results were experienced by the participants who took the combination of cissus quadrangularis and Irvingia gabonensis.
As both of these ingredients are found in Shredz, it’s no wonder it is such an effective diet pill.
Additionally, test subjects in the non-placebo groups also showed improvement in blood sugar levels and a reduction in risk factors of cardiovascular disease.
You’ll notice that osteoporosis is listed above in the health issues that this herb can help with. That is because this herb has been found, through studies conducted on rats, to increase bone thickness and density. In human testing, it has also been shown to promote the growth of osteoblasts, which are bone-forming cells.
While it is available as a standalone supplement by itself, it is best to get your dose in a diet pill. In this form, it will be combined with other active ingredients to accomplish all objectives of a diet pill: raise your metabolism, provide energy, and suppress your appetite. As evident above, when combined with African Mango and other ingredients, the efficacy is much greater than when taken alone.

Following up on a previous post about pantothenic acid, the next on the list of diet pill ingredients to take a look at is African Mango. I came across this one when I was looking at the label on my bottle of Shredz (reviewed here).
I have previously written about the health benefits of mangoes, so I had an idea of what this does for you. All the same, I wanted to take a specific look at the African Mango and what it does for your body, with an eye on how it can help with weight loss.
You may have heard about this ingredient before, as it has become all the rage ever since Dr. Oz featured it in a segment on his show.
Since then, it’s been all over the internet – you may have even gotten annoying pop-up ads for it. Everybody has jumped on the train and started hawking this in their diet pills, trying to capitalize on whatever is the hot ingredient of the time.
The form that it takes in diet pills is an extract from the seed of the West African Irvingia Gabonensis fruit, which is the fancy name for the African Mango. It has been touted for its ability to assist in weight loss, lowering fat levels, cholesterol levels, as well as leptin levels. Let’s take a look at the many benefits of this magical fruit.
Studies have been conducted with participants taking 150 mg of this extract twice daily. The result was a significant improvement in body weight, fat percentage, and waist size. On top of all those measurables, there was also a marked improvement in heart health, cholesterol levels (particularly in LDL, the bad cholesterol), blood glucose levels, and leptin levels.
The most remarkable thing to come from this study is that all these advancements came with no change to the participants’ diet or exercise routines. On average, test subjects lost 8 to 10 pounds without any alteration to their lifestyles.
As this is a natural fruit extract, there isn’t really anything to worry about when consuming a diet pill with this ingredient. This fruit is quite popular in its area of origin and has been eaten daily by some tribes for centuries. However, some users have reported an increase in their libido (like taking a testosterone booster). So, while that is an unintended side effect… is it really a side effect? I mean, you can get a better body and have a higher sex drive? Sounds like a win-win to me!
According to many of the studies, almost all participants lost an initial weight of up to 10 pounds. However, the results tapered off after reaching that point. Short-term results are promising with this extract. The jury is still out whether the continuous use will yield long-term results.
In another episode of my series of posts on the ingredients that make up diet pills on the market, I take a look at pantothenic acid, otherwise known as Vitamin B5. I came across this ingredient when I was reading the nutritional label on my Shredz diet pills and was curious as to what purpose it serves. It is common in other dietary supplements, so there must be something behind it that makes it great for weight loss. Let’s find out exactly what it does!
This is a water-soluble vitamin that helps your body convert carbohydrates into glucose, which in turn gives your body energy.
This property is very similar to biotin, another ingredient that you will find in Shredz and other diet pills.
You can find this vitamin in both plants and animals. It is rare that you have a deficiency of it through your normal food consumption.
However, to get the most benefit of it, it is wise to add more of it through supplementation to fully experience its weight loss and other health benefits. That said, let’s take a look at what advantages it provides.
Taking a vitamin B5 supplement alone won’t lead to losing weight, but it certainly won’t hurt. What this vitamin does is helps your body maintain proper metabolism and digestion of foods, according to studies. It basically takes the food that you consume and turns it into energy. The alternative to that is that your body creates fat stores with this food if it isn’t burned up by your metabolism.
With this increase in energy from your food intake, you can exercise longer without fatigue, better repair muscle and tissue. Once you have reached your goal weight through diet and exercise and supplementation, it can help you maintain your desired weight.
Studies have indicated that pantethine can help decrease the risk factors of cardiovascular disease (heart attack, stroke, etc.). This is because vitamin B5 can help the production of red blood cells, which increases circulation and transmission of cells. It also assists in the mobilization of iron, which helps to combat anemia and iron-deficiency diseases like fatigue and shortness of breath.
There is strong evidence that points to this vitamin aiding in the production of hormones in your body. Specifically, pantothenic acid interacts with the adrenal glands which are responsible for many hormonal functions. Additionally, it helps in regulating the level of cortisol in your body. Your body requires a small amount of this hormone to maintain a healthy metabolism.
This vitamin is abundant in our diets. You can find it in proteins like liver, fish, lobster (read more here on its health benefits), and poultry. Vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, potatoes, and leafy greens have high pantothenic acid content. Additionally, you can find it most dairy products as well as legumes, nuts, grains, and mushrooms. An average adult should consume around 5-6 milligrams per day, which is easily attainable through a proper diet.
I always like to know what I put into my body. That inspired me to take a look at the ingredient labels of the supplements that I consume and take a deep dive into the formula and see what each ingredient does to serve the supplement’s purpose.
One item that I am seeing in a lot of dietary supplements is Biotin, which I noticed on the label of my Shredz Fat Burner. Curious about why this is added, and what it does for my body, I wanted to research it a little bit more to see what benefit it has.

When you consume biotin, your resting metabolic rate is heightened, meaning that you are burning more calories than normal – even when you aren’t active. Studies have indicated that biotin can help lower the levels of LDL, the bad cholesterol, as well as total cholesterol levels in your body. Having bad or high cholesterol is one of the precursors to heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular issues. Not only does biotin help control your weight, but it also has benefits for your overall health!

Whenever I am choosing between supplements, I always look at the nutritional label. I want to know what is in it and what I’m putting in my body. In general, I’m looking for natural ingredients that I recognize and know how to pronounce. It’s a simple rule of thumb to make sure you’re getting a natural product.
Sometimes, however, you come across ingredients that are hard to pronounce or know what they’re derived from. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad ingredients, they’re just not a common nutrient you recognize. Phenylalanine is one such ingredient that I’ve found in one of my most recommended brands of diet pills Phen24, so I decided to take a closer look at what it is and what it does.

We lose weight when we create a caloric deficit. If you want to shed a few pounds, you need to be metabolizing more calories than you’re taking in.
You can attack this from two angles (and both should be followed). You can burn more calories by exercising more and raising your metabolism, and you can eat less. Getting enough of the amino acid phenylalanine helps you stick to portion control and get rid of cravings for unhealthy snacking.
It is possible to buy this amino acid as a supplement on its own. But to best get the weight loss benefits from it, it is best to purchase it as an active ingredient in a diet pill. This way, it will be blended together with other active ingredients in a powerful formula that will together satisfy the three diet pill objectives I outlined earlier in this post.

Guarana is a prized fruit that is most commonly found in South America, particularly the Amazonian region. The health benefits of it are primarily obtained by extracting and processing the seeds into powder form. As you can see in the image at the top of this post, it is quite a unique looking fruit. They look like eyeballs! I definitely haven’t seen this at my local grocery store. However, the benefits are plentiful. I’m glad it is available as an ingredient in diet pills (such as Zotrim) and energy drinks.
While its use in the beverage and diet industries is relatively new, it has had wide use for ages among Amazonian tribes. Primarily it has been used for its therapeutic properties, as well as its caffeine content for stimulant effects.
