Benefits of Maca Root

I always like to know what I put in my body. When I saw maca root powder listed as an ingredient in this Iron Brothers testosterone booster, I wanted to know what it is and what it does for me. Is it a useful additive in their supplement formula, or is it just filler?

I did some research and the following is what I’ve come up with on how it benefits the body.

What are the Health Benefits of Maca Root?

This is a native plant from Peru that has really risen in popularity in the diet and supplement industries lately. It is a cruciferous vegetable much like broccoli or cauliflower and grows at high altitude in the Andes mountain range.

Maca comes in powder form as a standalone supplement or mixed into a formula with other active ingredients. Traditionally it has been used to increase sex drive (which leaves no question as to why it is in a testosterone booster). Additionally, it can provide energy and stamina. However, the health benefits don’t stop there.

Rich in Nutrients

Maca root powder brings a tremendous amount of vitamins and minerals. It’s practically like taking a multivitamin, which is why you find it in many of those supplements as well. One ounce of this powder brings the following nutritional value:

  • Calories: 91
  • Carbs: 20 grams
  • Protein: 4 grams
  • Fiber: 2 grams
  • Fat: 1 gram
  • Vitamin C: 133% of daily value
  • Copper: 85% of daily value
  • Iron: 23% of daily value
  • Potassium: 16% of daily value
  • Vitamin B6: 15% of daily value
  • Manganese: 10% of daily value

As you can see, it is rather high in protein for a plant, as well as provides a good dose of carbs, and tons of essential vitamins and minerals.

Increases Sex Drive

Clinical studies, such as this one, have demonstrated an increase in sex drive in both men and women through supplementation of maca root.

Outside of its use in t-boosters, you will also find it in many male enhancement pills.

Improved Sperm

Another reason why it is found in t-boosters and male enhancement pills is that of its effect on fertility. Studies have indicated that supplementing with maca can increase both male sperm count, as well as sperm motility (quality).

Alleviates Menopause Symptoms

While the previous benefits were more geared towards men, maca also has utility for women. During menopause, women experience a drop in estrogen levels which brings about many unpleasant symptoms. Nausea, hot flashes, irritability, sleeping issues, and vaginal dryness all come with this stage in a woman’s life. Studies have demonstrated that maca root can help reduce the severity of these symptoms.

Improved Athletic Performance

Another trait that makes it great for a testosterone booster or sports supplement! Maca can help increase muscle strength and size, boost your energy, and improve overall athletic performance. One of the key ways it does this is through increased endurance.

Prostate Benefits

The prostate, a male gland in the nether regions, becomes enlarged as men age. Studies have shown that maca root can combat the enlargement of this gland and help fight prostate cancer.
